Frequently Asked Questions About APO/FPO/DPO mail to the Military Post Office (MPO)
How long does it take to delivery mail to APO/FPO/DPO Military or Diplomatic addresses?
Military APO/FPO/DPO Mail has varied delivery estimates based on where you are shipping to. This information is copied directly from USPS.com: Military APO/FPO/DPO Mail has unique transportation and handling requirements which result in extending the standard delivery time for each class of mail. Because APO/FPO/DPO mail is transported outside of the United States to and from overseas locations (including remote and war-zone locations), customers should be advised of these transit times. As of summer, 2021, these are the delivery timeframe estimates for USPS First Class & Priority Mail (no difference between their delivery times):
- EUROPE / ATLANTIC (APO/FPO AE ZIP Codes beginning with 090-092 and 094-099): 7 - 9 days
- IRAQ / AFGHANISTAN / MIDDLE EAST (APO/FPO AE ZIP Codes beginning with 093): 7 - 13 days
- JAPAN / KOREA / PACIFIC ISLANDS / FAR EAST (APO/FPO AP ZIP Codes beginning with 962-966): 7 - 9 days
- CENTRAL AMERICA / SOUTH AMERICA / CARIBBEAN (APO/FPO AA ZIP Codes beginning with 340): 7 - 9 days
Should the city and country be included in overseas Military APO/DPO/FPO Mail addresses?
No. When sending Military Mail to someone out of the USA, do not include the city or country name. Using a foreign city or country name may cause the mail to be handled via international mail services instead of the Military Postal System. If you include a city or country name in your Military address, I will hold your order and contact you to correct the address.
What is required besides the recipient's name in the Military MPO/APO/FPO/DPO address?
You need to include the recipient's name, rank and unit in addition to the correctly formatted address. Note that all mail must be addressed to a specific person - the old "Any Service Member" or "Any Wounded Warrior" addresses are no longer accepted. Valid examples include:
SSGT KEVIN TAYLOR
PO3 CHAD WALTERS
PFC JOHN DOE
What is the format for Military Mail APO/FPO/DPO?
Overseas military addresses must contain the APO or FPO designation along with a two–character “state” abbreviation of AE, AP, or AA and the ZIP Code or ZIP+4 Code. AE is used for armed forces in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Canada; AP is for the Pacific; and AA is the Americas, excluding Canada. Valid examples include:
APO AE 09001-5274
FPO AP 96606-2783
For domestic military mail, use only the approved city name as listed in the City-State file, the two-character state abbreviation and the ZIP Code or ZIP+4 Code. Valid examples include:
MINOT AFP ND 58705-1253
What is the delivery address line for Overseas Military APO/FPO addresses?
The Delivery Address Line for all APO/FPO military mail must be standardized to include the appropriate military address type with its assigned number, plus a box number. There are five possible military address types: CMR (Consolidated Mail Room), OMC (Official Mail Center), PSC (Postal Service Center), UMR (Unit Mail Room), and UNIT. Standardize the Delivery Address Line as shown in the following examples:
CMR 830 BOX 51
OMC 8 BOX 74
UNIT 908 BOX 111
PSC 1650 BOX 10
UMR 6 BOX 96
