One of the best things about Malachite is that, despite having been mined for a long time since humans have admired this stone since ancient times, a lot of the original sources of Malachite are still producing!
That’s in part because one of the major components of Malachite stones is Copper, which is relatively abundant. It’s also the Copper that’s responsible for the bright green colors!
There is a lot of fake Malachite out there, but a lot of it is actually pretty easy to spot. Resin fakes often aren’t the right colors of green.
Another good tell is if the Malachite contains both bands and blotches of color. Natural formations aren’t necessarily very neat, which results in highly varied banding that is difficult to mimic in fake stones.
Lastly, look for imperfections. If the pattern is too regular, there are no imperfections, and every band of color is the exact same width, it’s probably fake.
