January Birthstone Jewelry

January's birthstone is the beautiful Garnet - representing love and passion - as well as bringing you creativity and peace of mind.
Commonly seen as the color red, Garnets actually span across multiple hues of red, green, pink and brown! I use naturally beautiful wine-red Garnet stones for my designs.

ABOUT EARTH SONG JEWELRY

What is the symbolism and meaning of Garnet birthstone jewelry?

Historically, a pomegranate was often given as a gift of passion and associated with eternal love. Being named for the pomegranate's deep-red seeds, Garnet earrings and Garnet necklaces have been given as gifts symbolizing love over the ages.

When did Garnet become January's birthstone?

Garnets have been used to represent January as far back as the 15th century. Many months have "traditional" vs "modern" birthstones - but Garnets have stood the test of time as January's birthstone!

Are Garnets the same as Rubies?

For centuries, Garnets and Rubies (along with red Spinels) were grouped as the same stone "family" - all being erroneously referred to as different types of "rubies." It wasn't until about 1800 that Ruby (and its relative, the Sapphire) was recognized as a separate gemstone species! So, no, Garnets are not the same as Rubies (which are July's birthstone).

Is January’s birthstone the red Garnet?

Those born in January are lucky to have the beautiful and diverse Garnet as their birthstone. Garnets are commonly red, but they also come in an extraordinary range of colors, including orange, yellow, purple and vibrant green. There are even Garnets that change color from blue to purple in different lighting! Even with this range of colors, January's birthstone is typically represented by the red Garnet gemstone. My Garnet handmade natural stone jewelry collection uses beautiful wine-red Garnets.

What types and styles of handmade Garnet birthstone jewelry do you make?

In addition to dangling and uniquely designed Garnet natural stone heart shaped hoop earrings, I create Garnet multi-stone chain and bar necklaces.

Is Sterling Silver jewelry hypoallergenic and nickel free?

Yes! Sterling Silver is an alloy that does not contain any nickel - and nickel free jewelry is hypoallergenic. All of my handmade natural stone jewelry is hypoallergenic! To learn more about hypoallergenic jewelry, see my article on Hypoallergenic & Nickel Free Jewelry.
